What is Rust?

A scrolling explainer on the chemistry of corrosion, built around Wikipedia's entry on rust and a real rusted object you can drag and turn.

3D Scanning Web Development Material Research
One continuous scroll — this is a fraction of its full length.

A scrollytelling piece on how and why iron rusts. The descriptions are pulled from the Wikipedia entry on rust, since that is where most people would actually go to look it up, and I was interested in what happens when that flat encyclopedia text is placed next to the thing it describes. The object is a real corroded piece that I scanned with photogrammetry and rendered in 3D. You drag to turn it, and scroll to move through the chemistry of what you are looking at.
