Rethinking single-use packaging by designing for a material's entire lifecycle — not just the moment someone holds it.

Most "sustainable" packaging still asks a user to trust an unfamiliar material without ever explaining what happens to it after use — a compostable cup that looks and behaves exactly like plastic gives people no reason to treat it any differently once it's in their hand.

I wanted to design a container where the material itself communicates its own end-of-life, so sustainable behavior doesn't depend on a label the user has to read and believe.

Harbor Forms uses suspension-based 3D bioprinting with seaweed to grow vessels rather than manufacture them — the process itself is closed-loop, with zero synthetic inputs. That constraint shaped the form language directly: instead of designing a shape and finding a biodegradable material to fill it, I let the growing/printing process determine what forms were structurally honest, so the object's organic texture visibly signals "this came from somewhere, and it goes back."

Every design decision was tested against one question: does holding this object change how someone thinks about disposal, before they even read a word about it?

Designing for decomposition changes the entire design vocabulary — symmetry, gloss, and precision (the usual signals of "quality") all read as artificial once the goal is to look grown rather than made. The more the surface embraced irregularity, the more people described the object as trustworthy and biodegradable in early reactions, even before I explained the material.

It reframed sustainability for me as a UX problem as much as a materials one: the experience of an object has to make the "right" behavior the obvious one.
